Chubby Muffin Sculpin

The Chubby Muffin Sculpin

Angler Matthew Warner

I started tying and fishing the Chubby Muffin last fall and it is now the staple sculpin pattern in my box. I fish it with a strip and pause retrieve to make it look like it’s injured and fleeing. The key is to swim and present the fly with it’s head down stream or broadside to the fish. The takes are often times ferocious and come with out little warning… I’m pretty sure they take so hard due to the large head and pronounced eyes. Killer site and even better flies. I’ve been tying your chubby muffin pattern in olive and hitting browns and steelhead on the lake michigan shoreline this spring. However, I’ve changed up the pattern a little bit. I switch out the rabbit tail and replaced it with four olive grizzly schlappen feathers. The pattern still looks great in the water but is a bit lighter andeasier to cast. Just a little variation to try if you haven’t already. Thanks again for sharing your pattern with the rest of us!

Nick thanks for the kind words and I love it when my patterns fish well for other people! That sounds like a good tweak for stillwaters, it would also have a slower sink rate than the rabbit as well.
